Lightroom Preset - Soft Tones Dreamy (for LR4)

This is based on my previous preset “Soft Tones Dreamy” I made for Aperture.
Since many of you have asked for a Lightroom version… Here you have it now.
Sorry it took me so long :-P

It’s a low contrast, low saturation preset.
I crushed the blacks using the “Basic Tones – Black” slider and then I pushed the dark tones back up using the RGB custom curve.

When I exported the Preset I didn’t touch the common settings like Exposure, White Balance, Noise Reduction, Sharpening( and so on).
So if you already have your own exposure compensation this preset won’t mess with that.

Hi catdogg!
I’m glad you like it :)
You can contact me at andrearusky at hotmail dot com

The key to achieve a soft tone look in Lightroom 4 is:

Raising up the contrast (something like +60) to start loosing details in the shadows and highlights

Lowering the Blacks (a lot, until you lose details in the shadows, something around -65)

Lowering Vibrance (around -30) and Saturation a little bit (like -10)

Using the Tone Curve (the new RGB Curves in Lightroom 4) and raising up the shadows: pick up the 1st point (on the left hand side) of the curve and pull it up until you see the shadows showing up in grey tones). You can open my preset and check the shape of the Curve.

Usually I also go to the Blue Curve and I raise the shadows point there as well (and I do a little bit also for the Red and Green curves)

Also, I do some tweaking on the individual colors, to locally reduce saturation on the colors that are not close to the skin tones. I also play with the Split Toning a touch (cyan highlights and orange shadows)

Hope it helps!

Hi santatelancs!
The images I’ve used are actually from Tokyo, not Hong Kong.

But I do live in Hong Kong!
